SEARCH OF THE HEAT AND GOOD INSEMINATION MOMENT

For a correct identification of the heat it would be ideal to proceed to the search of the heats 2 times a day.
The exposure to the boar facilitates the identification of the heat of the sow and it to establish some reflex of immobility above all if adult boars are used and it are allowed a contact direct face to face with the sow.
The real heat is preceded by premonitory signs (redness and swelling of the vulva, nervousness of the animal, attempts to climb on other female, absence of hunger, presence of vaginal mucus). These signs, not present always contemporarily they precede the heat acclaimed, of around 12 hours even if in the gilts can also spend 2 days before the acclaimed heat is established.
The acclaimed heat corresponds to the appearance of the reflex of immobility.
Although the fertilization is programmed on the base of the appearance of the heat, the success of the insemination is conditioned by the ovulation (moment of the break-up of the follicle and the beginning of the migration of the cell egg toward the meeting with the sperm)

The ovulation is verified to the 2/3 of the duration of the heat, in average 30-36 after the beginning of the acclaimed heat.

If could foresee the moment of the ovulation an only fertilization could be performed in 16–24 hours that precede the ovulation.

Since cannot be foreseen with precision the duration of the heat and therefore the moment of the ovulation, the good results, are gotten performing the fertilization twice as suitable in the scheme.

When the sow returns in heat over the 5°-6° day from the weaning, the total duration of the heat is reduced and the A.I. can be anticipated.

TO PERFORM THE INSEMINATION CORRECTLY

1 • Check that the sow is in heat from at least 12 hours (less if the heat more than 5 days appears after the weaning)

1

2 • Clean carefully the vulvare region with clean paper

3 • Lubricate the catheter end and to insert holding it tilts up for not introduce it in the meato urinario

4 • Check that the catheter has inserted in the cervix well (different formality to second that an inserted traditional catheter is used rotating it in sense anti-clockwise, or to buffer inserted to pressure)

4

5 • Apply a least pressure to let flow out the seed (doesn’t want scrubs us! An acceptable less than 20%. Often more than 50% of the seed introduced ebb to if this phase is not conducted correctly and the result of the fertilization becomes negative)

6 • If the seed doesn’t flow out, not to force, to disconnect and reinsert the catheter and to activate the uterine contractions stimulating the sow
(see “to Activate the share of the sow”)

7 • Don’t introduce air in the uterus in the attempt to empty the container for the seed (rather is better if he/she remains of seed in few in the container, the air introduced in the uterus it would make ebb to the seed to the outside)

8 • To leave in the center the catheter for some minute reduces the reflux and it favors the diffusion of the seed in the varied uterine districts

TECHNIQUE OF POST-CERICAL FERTILIZATION

This technique foresees the use of a normal catheter with inserted a straw, which once that the catheter is inserted in cervix you/he7she is put for ulterior 10/20 cm to deposit the seed in the first part of the uterus overcoming so the whole run that the seed would have to let for overcoming the cervix.

TO ACTIVATE THE SHARE OF THE SOW

During the practice of the artificial insemination the sow has to realize that the even fecundates is in progress.
In this case the sow reacts to this perception activating physiological mechanisms that:
• they facilitate the progression of the seed in the genital line
• they reduce the reflux of seed
• they facilitate the execution of the artificial insemination.

The reflux of seminal material represents one of the principal causes of reduced efficiency of the I.A.

The share of the sow is gotten during the fertilization:

• continuing to stimulate the sow with pressure on the back.
holding a boar next to the sow, possibly in way from to allow a contract direct face face between the two animals (in this case the effect of the boar doesn’t serve to identify the heat but to favor the uterine contractions and goes up again her/it some seed in the female genital line).
